These 4 Railway Stations Are Getting Airport-Type Makeover – World-class Design, Amenities Coming Soon!

Indian Railways is always seeking ways to bring about improvement, and the railway provider manages to find them too! This time, Indian Railways is planning to give some railway stations a makeover.

These railway stations will be renovated, refurbished and adorned with airport-like facilities and passenger-friendly amenities. Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Limited (IRSDC) is the organization taking care of this upheaval of railway stations under its station redevelopment and beautification initiative.

Which are these railway stations who will get a new face courtesy of the IRSDC? Read on to know all the details!

Habibganj Railway Station

This will be India’s first world class railway station, and will follow the footsteps of the Heidelberg railway station in Germany. An amount of Rs. 450 crore has been sanctioned to be spent on this particular railway station of Madhya Pradesh, of which, Rs 100 crore has been set aside for the refurbishment of the infrastructure. The rest of the amount will be spent on amenities such as building glass structures and facilities for food, entertainment, waiting lobby, etc.

Apparently this station will have a dome like structure made of glass after its renovation at the entrance. The ISRDC is partnering up with a private firm, Bansal Group to work on the remodeling of this station under a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model.

Also, 600 additional waiting benches, cleaner toilets, retail areas, video game zones, virtual museums are some of the other facilities that might be installed on this station.

Gandhinagar Railway Station

A Rs. 250 crore project, the Gandhinagar railway station is being remodeled by the ISRDC and the Gujarat State Government. The station will have numerous facilities such as kiosks, toilets, food stalls, book stalls, and shops and a wainting lounge with 600 seats for passengers.

There is also a 5-star hotel to be constructed in the premises of the station with 300 rooms. The foundation stone was laid by PM Narendra Modi in 2017, and the main format of the station will be similar to that of a convention hall, ‘Mahatma Mandir’.

Surat Railway Station

The railway station of Surat will be designed as a Multi-Modal Transportation Hub (MMTH), and will take up Rs. 650 crores. The unique factor of this station is that it will have connectivity to people using multiple modes of transport, such as railway, long-distance bus, city bus, BRTS and HMC buses auto, taxi, non-motorised vehicles, the proposed urban metro railway, etc.

This railway station will have about 44 lifts, 19 staircases and 22 escalators for ease of passengers.

Baiyappanahalli Railway Station

There will be numerous facilities on this railway station as well, such as waiting areas, food courts, restaurants, retail shops, cafes, kiosks, new escalators, elevators, passenger information and display systems, safety and security systems, etc.

An amount of Rs. 250 crore will be spent on the redevelopment of the station and the building will be a typology of elliptical shapes.

Along with the above mentioned railway stations, Anand Vihar, Bijwasan, Chandigarh, Shivaji Nagar, Nagpur, Gwalior, Amritsar, Gandhi Nagar (Jaipur), Sabarmati, Kanpur and Thakurli stations are also proposed to be remodeled soon.
